Happy Holidays from the UL FSRI Team!

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), on average, one of every 32 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in a death, compared to an average of one death per 143 total reported home fires. Three of every ten are caused by electrical problems, and one in four starts from a heat source that’s too close to the tree. With the winter holidays approaching, the UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute (UL FSRI) team has created a short video to help spread holiday fire safety tips specifically around Christmas trees and other holiday decorations.

This video features a fire inside a living room involving a non-watered tree to show how rapidly fire spreads, especially with a Christmas tree in the home. UL FSRI Marketing Specialist Jennifer Williams shares tips from UL Safety Smart and the NFPA that explain the proper process for picking, placing, caring for, and decorating Christmas trees. Other tips about candles, lights, decorations, smoke alarms, fire escape plans, and the importance of closing doors before going to bed at night are also discussed.

UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute is dedicated to increasing firefighter knowledge to reduce injuries and deaths in the fire service and in the communities they serve.
