Fire Service Considerations with Lithium-Ion Battery ESS – An Investigation
On April 19, 2019 an incident that resulted in severe line-of-duty injuries to four firefighters occurred in a lithium-ion battery energy storage system in Surprise, AZ. UL FSRI conducted an investigation into the incident, which identified several factors the contributed to the severity of the incident. They will present an overview of the incident, the contributing factors determined through the investigation, and recommendations for the fire service, code officials, utility companies, and manufacturers to prevent similar incidents.
